Día de los Muertos
The DeWitt High School Spanish classes recently studied Día de los Muertos, a popular Mexican holiday that blends the pagan, cultural beliefs of the ancient Aztec and Mayan Indians with the beliefs of Christianity. Students participated in the November 1 and November 2 celebration that honors deceased loved ones by building an altar in the classroom of flowers, food, and items that honored a deceased grandfather, by creating animal and skull maasks like those used in the parades, and by baking the traditional "pan de los muertos" served with Mexican hot chocolate.
