DES Watch D.O.G.S.

Tuesday night, November 19th, at DeWitt Elementary School, approximately 250 dads and their children showed up to hear about the Watch D.O.G.S. program. They enjoyed free pizza and cokes and had a chance to sign up and volunteer to be a Watch Dog. Watch Dogs started because of an incident that happened in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Two boys, an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old, decided that the answer to their problems was to pull a fire alarm and watch as their peer group walked outside and gun down four kids and a teacher. Jim Moore, the founder of Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students), decided it was time for the dads to step up. He thought "Who is missing in the schools?" and when he looked around it was DADS! Over 160 dads volunteered Tuesday night to be a Watch D.O.G. at DeWitt Elementary School! They will patrol the hallways and give warm greetings at the beginning of school and at the end. They will make sure kids are getting onto the bus and into cars safely. They will play at recess, eat lunch with the students, and join in on some PE activities. They will also let students read to them, help with spelling words, or study multiplication facts. We are so excited to get started December 1st with the first five dads!

Mr. Sniff |

Mr. Franks recently brought his English Pointer, Mr. Sniff, to visit Ms. Dana Horton's class. The class had read about several famous dogs in the past weeks, and had also read about Mr. Sniff. Mr. Sniff, an eight-year old birddog, lost his front leg to cancer. After Mr. Sniff's amputation, he would recover and compete in a field trial competetion in Ozark, Arkansas, against 32 other dogs. Mr. Sniff won 2nd place and was featured in the Purina Magazine. Ms. Dana's class wrote to Mr. Franks and requested that he bring Mr. Sniff to visit. Mrs. Franks brought Mr. Sniff to Ms. Dana's class and Ms. Meredith McGee's fourth grade class was invited to join them. Mr. Franks told the children about Mr. Sniff's recovery and victories.

The DeWitt High School Spanish classes recently studied Día de los Muertos, a popular Mexican holiday that blends the pagan, cultural beliefs of the ancient Aztec and Mayan Indians with the beliefs of Christianity. Students participated in the November 1 and November 2 celebration that honors deceased loved ones by building an altar in the classroom of flowers, food, and items that honored a deceased grandfather, by creating animal and skull masks like those used in the parades, and by baking the traditional "pan de los muertos" served with Mexican hot chocolate.

Students were told a fictitious story about a newly married couple that was haunted on their honeymoon night by ghosts of relationships past. The story helped students realize that the choice to be sexually active as a teen may indeed haunt their future marriage. The only TRUE ghostbuster is ABSTINENCE!!

DHS SADD "Ghost Out" Day |
Members of DHS Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) participated in the annual Ghost Out Day demonstrating the potential devastating results of making bad decisions. Every 33 minutes of every day, a life is lost as a result of an impaired driving crash. The Grim Reaper tapped selected students on the shoulder turning them into ghosts who spent the remainder of the day silent, clothed in black, and wearing tombstones depicting the bad decision that cost them their life. At the end of the day the ghosts were covered in sheets and displayed in the front hall for the student body to see between classes.

DMS Students Study Medieval Europe |

Students in Mr. Dollar's 7th grade social studies classes have been studying medieval Europe. Recently the classes had an activity where we drew names to see who would be a Serf (peasant), a Knight, a Lord, or a Lady (one of each from every class). Everyone in class got to try a piece of authentic peasant bread made just like in medieval days. It was a homemade rye bread. Most students were surprised to see how bland medieval food would have been. Students described the bread as tasting like everything from bagels to cardboard. Click the link below to see more photos. In the pictures some are giving a thumbs up if they thought the taste was okay or a thumbs down if they thought it was bad. To understand feudal society and how it was not always fare we added a twist. The nobles -- one Lord, one Lady, and one Knight from each class -- got to eat a little better than the rest of the class. They got to have a piece of cake. Most students thought this was not fair at all. Mr. Dollar told them it wasn't fair, but where you were born in society wasn't always fair either. It went really well and seemed to be a great way to finish out a chapter.
